Brittney Griner
Brittney Griner is a 31-year-old wife, daughter, WNBA star and two-time Olympic gold medalist from Houston, Texas. While she is one of the world’s fiercest competitors on the basketball court, she is a lovable humanitarian off of it. With deep ties to her communities, cultivated through hands-on work with organizations like the Phoenix Rescue Mission, It Gets Better Project and a range of anti-bullying and LGBTQ service-focused organizations, BG is regarded as one of her generations pioneers and most giving athletes. On February 17, 2022, the 6 foot 9 basketball star was arrested in the Moscow airport as she traveled to rejoin the Russian League powerhouse, UMMC Ekaterinburg - the team she has played for over the last seven seasons. The U.S. State Department publicly declared that Brittney was “wrongfully detained" on May 3, and since then, the USG has been working to secure her release. Like many WNBA players, Brittney has been traveling to Russia to play professionally overseas and earn income not otherwise available to her in the U.S.. Brittney's cruel detention has shed light on the massive gender pay inequity in U.S. sports and underscored the importance of protecting the sanctity of sport and all athletes traveling internationally for competition. The online petition to secure her safe and swift return to the states has collected over 150,000 signatures and is still growing (change.org/wearebg). Brittney has been wrongly detained for over (95) days, and Brittney's wife, family, team, the WNBA and NBA and a range of prominent athletes and celebrities are joining a growing chorus to demand The White House and the Biden Administration use all available tools to get her home.
